This initative is being led by Groundwork Bridgeport with support from the Office of Planning and Economic Development.

What is the project about?

The Cool Corridors project aims to identify areas in the East Side Neighborhood that are hottest during the summer months and add things to make them cooler. The project team will be working with local residents to find the main streets and paths they use in the neighborhood every day—like when walking to work, catching the bus, or going to a local store–and then develop ideas for things that could be done to help people stay cool. Some possible changes include planting shade trees, cooling murals, setting up misting stations at bus stops, and adding fun artwork to make walking, biking, or skating more enjoyable and safe—especially during heat waves.

Why are you doing this project?

Summers are getting hotter, and cities can feel even warmer because of all the buildings and roads. This is called the “urban heat island effect.” Too much heat can make it uncomfortable or even unsafe to be outside. This project uses nature-based ideas—like planting trees and adding greenery—to help cool down busy streets. It’s also a chance to make these places more beautiful and fun for everyone.

How can the community get involved?

Community members will have the chance to help spot the hottest areas and share ideas about what should be added and where. There will be chances to vote on designs, give feedback, help plant trees, and join events. The project will be shaped by what residents say, so everyone’s voice is important.
