The Office of Planning and Economic Development is actively looking to find new and innovative uses for vacant sites. We are writing grant proposals, fostering relationships with community leaders, and creating an environment to develop the economic life of the city to keep Bridgeport a livable city.

Post Office Square

Post Office Square Pre-Demolition

You might have already noticed changes at Post Office Square, at the corner of Main Street and Golden Hill Street, in the heart of downtown. You may have visited Skateport, a hub for roller skating events led by Takina Pollock Shafer, or even roller skated on the first seasonal street closure of its kind. You might have enjoyed an evening at Berlinetta Brewing Company’s new beer garden, which has been leased since May 2023. Or even visited a food truck thanks to Urban Synergy in Action, led by Kim Bianca Burgess. Post Office Square is Bridgeport’s new “urban living room” which brings amenities, open space, and a sense of community to downtown thanks to the efforts of community leaders.

We are pleased to announce that the Connecticut Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD) selected awarded Post Office Square along with seven other projects grant funds as part of the third round of the Connecticut Communities Challenge Grant program. The grant is for $2.25 Million and will include incubator spaces for micro-retail, a dog park, an event space, a beer garden (operated by Bridgeport’s Berlinetta Brewery), public art, and food truck infrastructure. By activating a disused and formerly blighted section of the city’s downtown north neighborhood, the project will drive economic development and small business growth.

Bridgeport’s Office of Planning and Economic Development (OPED) will be working closely with DECD to secure the funds and begin outreach and construction planning.
