How the City Addresses Blight:

As a city ages and properties change hands, it is not too uncommon to see sites dilapidate and fall into a state of disrepair. These properties notoriously hinder neighborhoods, pose a danger to pedestrians nearby, and blight communities.

When the state of disrepair has grown too much, the City can elect to take down dangerous buildings and create a new footprint for future development.

Remington Arms Facility

Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (UMC) was originally formed to provide firearms and ammunition to the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War. UMC was acquired in 1867 by Marcellus Hartley, an industry competitor who closed the firm and began moving the equipment to the current site in Bridgeport

In 1912, the Union Metallic Cartridge Company merged with Remington Arms Company; the resulting company was called Remington Arms Company, Inc. Remington Arms Company, Inc. manufactured primers, shot shells, and a wide range of small caliber ammunition, as well as typewriters and cutlery.

The Remington Shot Tower

At the center of the main Remington plant stands a slightly older building that played an important role in the munitions buildup: the 10-story brick shot tower built in 1909 it was at the time the tallest building in the State of Connecticut and was visible to mariners passing through long island sound. The Remington Shot Tower is one of only a few remaining shot towers in the United States.

Today, the Remington Shot Tower awaits further development. To maintain the building, the tower has received major renovations to stabilize the structure.

The Future

While the Remington Shot Tower awaits development, the majority of the remaining buildings within the complex are to be demolished, and the grounds to be cleaned. This site will host opportunities to develop in the near future.

The Remington Shot Tower stands as a reminder of the hearty industrial history of Bridgeport and awaits new opportunities to be integrated into the future of the city.
